Sudden infant death syndrome- SIDS.

Thirty years ago, while we were building our first house in Isreal we met our neighbor. She was in her early thirty’s and 39th weeks pregnant. The next time I saw her it was about a month later. I approached her and excitedly greeted her for the arrival of her new baby girl. She looked at me and shared that she had quiet labor, which means, that her fetus died in uterus. She explained that it was considered SIDS since her baby reached 40 weeks of gestation. This meeting is engraved in my mind forever. In addition, I met two other mothers that had experienced the loss of their babies to SIDS. I decided to read about this topic in order to raise awareness for mothers in my professional and personal community.

According to, Berger, K. S, (2018), Sudden infant death syndrome happens when healthy babies between the ages of two to six months, stop their breath and dies during their sleep, Berger, K. S, (2018). Some of the risks for SIDS occur during winter where babies are covered by certain linen, premature babies, and exposer to smoking. In addition, it appears that male babies are more pruned to the syndrome, Berger, K. S, (2018). Recent studies show that putting babies to sleep on their back, reduces the risk of SIDS, Berger, K. S, (2018). Recently, awareness of a campaign that focuses on teaching parents on putting their babies to sleep on their back, “Back to sleep”, Berger, K. S, (2018), caused the reduction in SIDS, Berger, K. S, (2018).

I researched SIDS is Israel, according to the state of Israel Ministry of Health, about 45 cases of SIDS occur in Israel per year. most of the cases are reported during winter and to babies between 2-6 months old. Some of the reasons for SIDS are placing a baby in a room with elevated temperature during winter, state of Israel Ministry of Health. The ministry of health collided with a society named Atid, to rais the public awareness to SIDS through a campaign that says “Safe sleep- Back up your baby”, state of Israel Ministry of Health. In addition, they came up with a list of suggestions and precautions for reducing the risks for SIDS. for instance, 22-degree centigrade is the appropriate degree a baby’s room should be hit during winter, state of Israel Ministry of Health. In addition, smoking in the same room with your baby is prohibited. Furthermore, keeping your baby face uncovered when he sleeps, and much more, state of Israel Ministry of Health.

On a personal note, I would like to share, that when my second baby was born, I used to have a baby monitor that was monitoring the baby’s breathing. After a few seconds of undetected breaths, an alarm went off. since my son was born one a month earlier than my original due date, and I was aware of the greater risks, having the baby monitor provided me with some sense of safety.

I find this list of the Israeli Ministery of health very helpful and I intend to print the instructions and share them in my community in order to raise awareness for this topic.

  1. I also looked into SIDS. So heartbreaking and mind boggling! I find it very interesting that your neighbor's case was considered SIDS even before the baby was born. I would have thought that would be a case of being stillborn. Regardless, still so sad. It's interesting how things may change depending on the country. Thanks for your information on Israel as well!
