EDUC 6990: Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels

The National organizations that I chose are The Council for Exceptional Children and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Besides, for a local organization that supports the county of my future residence in California, I chose the Inclusion Collaborative.

When I used to reside in California, I was a member of the NAEYC. My membership supported my professional work, as it provided me resources for my daily work with young children and their families. Also, it provided me with opportunities for professional growth, such as annual conferences and workshops. I currently live in Israel. As I started my educational journey, I registered once again to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), This time, to get access to resources to support my assignments and to educate myself with the research-based study on the field of Early childhood education.

As an Inclusion advocate, I have to affiliate with a national organization that focuses on children with special needs and their families. I would have to get updated with the latest research-based studies, resources, and professional growth opportunities such as workshops and conferences. Lastly, Since I would like to connect with a local agency in my community that supports educators, children with special needs, and families, I would like to choose the Inclusion Collaborative of Santa Clara County in California.

As for job opportunities, I found an inspiring role, serving as an Inclusion and Behavior consultant. Retrieved from:

The position emphasizes providing consultation and technical assistance for programs and educators working with children with special needs. The requirements are Masters in Special Education or Early childhood education that I will soon have. As I worked closely with families of children with special needs and have over 15 years of experience, I shared my wisdom and provided countless consultations to families and my colleagues. However, I lack the expertise of professional consultation required for this position.

The second job opportunity that I would love to pursue is working closely with children's families within the Autism Spectrum. I want to use my experience and knowledge of working with the DIR (Developmental Individual Differences Relationships) model to support the child's growth, development, and communication skills. As I completed the first stage of the certification, I would have to pursue the second stage for more comprehensive and in-depth knowledge.

  1. Ilana,
I always enjoy reading and learning from your posts! We have such similar interests and passions for serving those with special needs, and specifically children with autism. One website I think you will find very interesting and full of many resources is www.sensoryhealth.org. Since autism and sensory processing disorder are more highly correlated, there are great resources for families as well as practitioners to help meet the needs of children with SPD.

  2. Hi llana,
I agree, when advocating for young children it is always important to be up to date with knowledge and resources because they provide us with the best possible chance to help young children and their families. I think it is great that you have a passion to help children with special needs. All children no matter their differences deserve to belong to inclusive communities and environments.

  3. I can understand the importance of inclusion of various abled children. Inclusion supports the ability to learn for each other, representation of diversity and contributions of resources.

  4. I enjoyed reading your post and I like how you are advocating for inclusion. I am interested in learning more about ways to ensure my classroom is inclusive and providing accommodations for children who may not qualify for services. Your work in gaining your certification will truly help more families. All children have the ability to learn we just need to meet them where they are.
