Sharing Web Resources

The website that I chose to focus on this class is NAEYC. Being a member allows me with greater access to some resources such as magazines, articles, blogs, and books in every topic that relates to the Early childhood field. As I acknowledge the issue of equity that is the focus of my current study, I decided to research this topic, in terms of closing the gap of inequality, and continue to read about advocacy.

In the article, Making Connection. Embracing Equity: Helping All Children Reach their Full Potential, Allvin (2018), addresses the gap between children from low socio-economic families, children of the minority, and of white children from high-income families. NAEYC addresses the inequity by providing mutual and equal respect to all diverse children and families, discusses the role of the families in their children’s education, and the role of bonding in the future success of the children,(Allvin, 2018). Besides, it is the role of early childhood educators to advocate for equality in the field of early childhood education, and educators “are being held accountable for reducing disparities” (Allvin, 2018). Also, “State and federal policies reflect comprehensive approaches to providing equitable access to high quality early learning, with particular focus on children living in poverty, multilingual children. Children of color and children of disabilities (Allvin, 2018).

Also, I followed the blog of Megan Medison, From Teacher To Equity Activist. Her first and most potent suggestion of how to become an activist is to share your philosophy and passion with a colleague. That conversation will portray the love we have and highlight the topics that matter the most to us. The next step will be to find an organization of other people that shares the same thoughts and passion. “ All social change happens when groups of people organized together to issue a demand in a collective voice” ( Medison, 2020).

These resources change my perception of advocacy entirely. I believe that it is my role as a professional educator to voice the inequity of the children and the families I serve. Reading the article and the blog allowed me to understand how I can make a difference. It all starts with small steps. Our awareness elevates with learning and understanding the issues, which will lead to knowledge and the passion for making a difference. The next step will be collaborating with other professionals to voice our thoughts.
